In W30 in the durian landscape, the global durian fruit market was valued at USD 24.6 billion in 2022, and it is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4% during the forecast period from 2023 to 2030. It was reported that in Vietnam’s Southwest, Southeast, and Central Highlands regions, prices for Thai durian, Ri6 durian, Musang King durian, and Chuong Bo durian remain high. Ri6 durians have increased to USD 0.13-0.21/kg (VND 3-5 thousand/kg), and Thai durian prices have also seen a significant increase. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Vietnam has urged localities to closely monitor plant quarantine subjects in planting areas and packing facilities with granted codes. This comes after China issued warnings of violations regarding shipments of bananas, jackfruits, mangoes, longan, dragon fruit, and durian exported from Vietnam. Strict control measures are being emphasized to ensure compliance with plant quarantine regulations.
In the first six months of 2023, Vietnamese durian exports reached USD 876 million, an increase from USD 44.2 million in the same period in 2022 (about 20 times higher YoY). Most of Vietnam's durian fruit exports, accounting for 95% of the total export value in this commodity group, were exported to China, amounting to USD 835 million. It is estimated that in the peak months, China imported Vietnamese durian worth approximately USD 350 million. The surge in Vietnamese durian fruit exports in China, boosted by China's official opening in Jul-22, led to the first official shipment reaching billions of people until Sep-22. It increased the total revenue to USD 421 million in 2022, a 137% YoY increase.
Durians grown at Hainan Sanya Yucai Ecological Durian Plantation Base in China were introduced to the market on July 22, as reported by media sources from Hainan province. Youqi's 800-hectare (ha) durian plantation in Sanya, Hainan Island, is expected to harvest 85 ha by Jul-23. These first-ever durians were listed for pre-sale on JD.com in Jun-23, with an average unit price of USD 11.2-14/kg). Additionally, it was reported that China's locally grown durian from Hainan will be offered for a price of USD 16.85/kg (VND 400 thousand/kg), three times higher than imported durian from Vietnam. However, its limited supply and high price are not expected to challenge the market share of manufacturers and Southeast Asian imports.
