Saudi Arabia accounts for about half of the Egyptian lemon exports. Other Gulf countries, including Russia, are also interested in the Egyptian Baladi variety, known for its unique taste and aroma. Russia ranks second with about 10 thousand tons of exports, while Eastern European, African, and East Asian markets are interested in the Adalia and Sheairy varieties. The Bearss Lime variety is also gaining popularity due to its quality and taste. Egypt's citrus industry is strengthening its position as a significant player in the global market and contributing significantly to its economy.
Lemon production in Spain is anticipated to recover, reaching 1.16 million tons, a record 28% year-on-year (YoY) increase. The country is the leading producer of citrus fruits in the European Union (EU) and sixth globally, with exports reaching an average value of USD 3.4 billion (EUR 3.3 billion) per campaign. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has made harvest forecasts available to the sector, improving information and decision-making.
On the other hand, Mexico's lime shortage is expected to persist in the last quarter of2023, with potential increased volume in the second week of Nov-23, potentially leading to price adjustments if demand fluctuates. Furthermore, The export volume of limes is expected to remain low due to drought and decreased quality due to heat. The local market will see good demand on Dec-23. Lime prices will stay above USD 30/box and increase depending on caliber.
Lastly, the lemon prices have increased due to decreased arrival in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) and a doubled price in the Indian wholesale market. The retail lemon prices currently stand at USD 0.6 per kilogram (INR 5/kg). The increase is predicted to continue due to changing weather conditions and people's preference for lemonade during humid weather. In the Mumbai APMC, lemons were imported from Junnar and Ahmednagar, with ten cars and 17 tons entering the market.
