Between April 2020 and 2022, the prices of five commonly consumed fruits in Brazil, including orange, papaya, watermelon, apple, and banana, saw significant increases at the state-owned Ceagesp warehouse in São Paulo. The price hikes ranged from 32% to 46%, which exceeded the country's inflation rate during the same period. This situation was largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted sales channels and led to some fruit plantations being converted into grain and cane cultivation. However, both Abrafrutas and Conab emphasized that the temporary reduction in production was a strategic move to prevent losses rather than a negative factor for the fruit supply.
