The government has permitted soybean meals to be exported case-by-case basis. The waiver comes nearly four months after the trade ministry prohibited the shipment of a critical ingredient in poultry and livestock feed in response to farmer demands. The commerce ministry banned the export of soymeal on 12 October 2021 to curb a rise in feed prices in the domestic market. According to a notification from the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports, the ministry lifted the ban in the last week of February 2022, but only on one condition: permission would be granted on a case-by-case basis demand and availability.
Farmers were concerned that the relaxation would result in higher production costs. Exports of soybean meal have been permitted because prices are cheaper here than in the neighboring countries. In Bangladesh, duty-free imports of soybean meal, which remain after oil extraction, are allowed for edible oil producers, as soybean meal price is lower than in India.
