The varieties of Sudanese sesame 'Gedaref' and Ethiopian 'Humera' are highly prized for their sweetness, making them the bench market for the preparation of tahini sauce worldwide, especially in the Arab markets. Although Brazil has developed several local cultivars with the less bitter taste and good productivity, such as 'Seda', 'Anahi' and 'Trebol', they still lack the level of sweetness found in its most prominent competitors, making the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) work tirelessly on the constant development of new cultivars. In 2020, a new cultivar called 'Morena' was introduced to the market. Its main features are the high grain yield, oil content above 50%, and the reddish-brown color, appreciated in several world markets for tahini sauce making.
