Bulgarian horse farmers produced nearly 150 tons of horse meat last year, valued at EUR 464 thousand in sales revenue. The horse meat is used as a pet food as well as for human consumption and the retail price is over EUR 3.00 per kg and EUR 6.00 per kg respectively. On the other hand, slaughterhouses purchase the live horse meat at EUR 0.80 - EUR 1.05 per kg.

Horse meat production includes some quantities of mule donkey meat as well. Italy is one of the export markets for Bulgarian horse meat within the EU.
