Mexico is the largest producer of chili peppers as of 2023, accounting for approximately 40% of the world's production. Other significant producers include the United States, Peru, and Spain. The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported exports of over 158K mt of chili peppers in 2022, with the majority going to the United States.
The United States is also a significant producer and exporter. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the country exported approximately 64K mt of chili peppers in 2022, with Canada and Japan being the top importers. Other countries that export chili peppers include Peru, Spain, and China. However, their production and export volumes are relatively small compared to Mexico and the United States. Chili peppers exports are an important source of income for many farmers and producers in these countries, and the pepper's popularity in the global market is forecasted to continue growing.
