According to a report released on Feb-24 by Interfax-Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan exported 91.2 thousand tons of fresh apples in 2023, worth USD 52.8 million, a 10.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase. Most of these Azerbaijan apple exports were shipped to Russia, which imported 79.5 thousand tons of fresh apples worth USD 51.75 million, an increase of 3.1% YoY.
On February 20, 2024, the Washington apple industry and government representatives of the United States (US) celebrated the successful start of the apple shipping season following India's removal of retaliatory tariffs on US-grown apples. Before the 20% tariffs, Washington growers exported USD 120 million worth of apples to India, and at the lowest point, they exported less than USD 1 million. With the tariffs dropped for the 2023/24 season, growers have seen an immediate financial impact, with over 21 thousand metric tons (mt) of apples shipped to India this season, with sales estimated at USD 19.5 million. In comparison, the total apple exports in the 2022/23 season were just over 1.3 thousand mt, resulting in a value of USD 1.3 million.
British Columbia's fruit industry experienced an 8.1% YoY drop in production due to climatic adversities and market volatility. The province faced harsh weather patterns, including drought and fluctuating temperatures, affecting apple production and causing a 14% YoY decrease. Moreover, tent caterpillar infestations and temperature shifts affected blossom vitality, leading to a reduction in juicing apples. Additionally, escalating drought conditions increased water demand for crops and stressed fruit trees, causing a significant downturn in the industry.
The North Caucasus Interregional Department of Rosselkhoznadzor has reported a substantial rise in apple exports from the Stavropol Territory to various regions of Russia. Between the beginning of 2024 and February 19, 2024, a total of 2.1 thousand tons of apples were exported, nearly triple the volume compared to the same period in 2023. Most of these shipments were destined for the Moscow, Leningrad, and Samara regions. It is important to note that all products met the phytosanitary requirements of the Russian Federation.
