Morocco: First importer of Tunisian dates

The date production in Morocco is around 143,000 tonnes of dates, which places it in 12th place. At the same time, the Kingdom imports large quantities and is the world's leading importer of Tunisian dates (approximately 30000 metric tonnes).
It is also worth stating that the demand drastically increases during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan where dates are considered a part of the Ramadan consumption culture is every Moroccan household.
Morocco is also well-known by being the exporter of the popular “Medjool” date; a large, sweet cultivated variety of date (Phoenix dactylifera) from the Tafilalt region of Morocco. However, the latter is now grown as far abroad as California and South Africa.
