Dompu Regency in the East Nusa Tenggara province has emerged as a new producing region of vanilla in Indonesia. Since 2018, the local farmers in the province begun to shift the focus from producing cashew nuts to producing vanilla because the climate in this region is more suitable for vanilla production and because vanilla is significantly more profitable compared to cashew nuts. So far in 2020, the farmers in this region have been able to produce around 300 MT of vanilla, with around 70% of the output dedicated to export. One country where this commodity has been exported to is East Timor due to its close proximity with East Nusa Tenggara province, hence making it possible to ship the commodity using cargo ship which can keep the distribution cost at a competitive level while also being able to keep the freshness of the vanilla.
