In early 2020, due to increased demand from Japan, Vietnamese exports of fresh and frozen tuna increased slightly. However, due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in Asian countries, the Japanese government imposed social isolation measures. This has significantly affected the restaurant industry, where most Japanese consumers consume fresh and frozen tuna. Decreased demand for fresh and frozen tuna has actually led to a sharp increase in demand for canned tuna, however. As such tuna exporting countries such as Vietnam are adapting to the changes in the international markets, but starting to process more tuna into canned tuna.
