Bulgaria becomes a net importer of pork meat products as domestic slaughterhouses have decreased by almost 24% in 2020 mainly due to the numbers of pigs declining in the country caused by the African Swine Fever disease.
As consumer habits have changed in the country, domestic demand has been met by imports of pork raw materials mainly from Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, and the Netherlands.
About 70% of pork meat products were imported in previous years, a percentage that rose to 90% in 2020.
