In W11, the price of lettuce, celery, and cauliflower increased by 20-25% due to heavy rainfalls in California, a key supplier of fresh produce for Canada. Rainfalls affected the quality and maturity rate of the crops, leading to supply shortages and higher prices. Organic growers are particularly affected as they have fewer means to fight destructive insects. While some Canadians may have felt the price increase more than others, retailers and distributors may absorb some of the cost increase to retain customers. However, the high prices are forecasted to be temporary as domestic production in Canada ramps up in the spring.
