Shortage of production tonnages in global chickpea production continues to push chickpea prices higher. Turkish buyers/re-exporters continue to buy from producer countries such as Canada, Argentina, and Russia.
In Argentina, suppliers state that there are no high tonnages and do not foresee a price decline. Mexico is an important country in terms of large caliber (12mm) chickpea exports, and the sowing season continues. However, producers state that they may experience a decrease in yields due to rainfall. In 2022, Canadian chickpea exports increased by 10% compared to the previous year to 176K Tons. The most important markets were Turkey and the USA. As a result of reduced supply and an increase in exports, carry-out stocks fell to 147K Tons compared to 2021. The EU, the US, and Pakistan are forecasted to remain the main markets for Canadian chickpeas. Offers for Canadian mixed-size chickpeas are in the range of USD 1150-1170 CFR Mersin for Turkey.
Pakistan is in demand for significant tonnages of Russian chickpeas, with firms buying from Russia at USD 830-840 CFR in Karachi. However, prices are forecasted to rise due to the intense demand globally. Since Pakistan is one of the biggest chickpea consumer countries, many chickpea importers have their teams in Russia and can deal directly with farmers.
