Since 2017, Cameroon has imported an average of 100,000 MT of palm oil to fulfill the needs of its refined oil and soap industries. By 2022, under the pressure of the oilseeds refiners’ association, the government has given approval for the importation of 143,000 MT of palm oil into the country.
It is worth stating that despite the land availability and the agriculturally favorable climate, the country’s production still loiters around 400,000MT per year, which is very inferior to industry and household needs. The government policy has not been so effective to improve the output of smallholders and the commercial plantations. With growing demand, the country will continue to import more, leading Cameroon to an attractive market for palm oil suppliers.
