The Egyptian government has imposed a three-month ban on onion exports due to rising prices in the domestic market during W38. The price of onions has increased to USD 1.13 per kilogram (EGP 35/kg) in some markets, an increase from the Aug-23 price of USD 0.87/kg (EGP 27/kg) and USD 0.39/kg (EGP 12/kg) in 2022. According to the Director of the Field Crops Research Institute at the Ministry of Agriculture, the increase in onion prices is due to middlemen and traders hoarding onions.
