The European Union's (EU) interceptions of citrus shipments with citrus black spot from South Africa have tripled from 12 rejected shipments between Jan-22 and Aug-22 to 37 shipments in the same period of the current season. In August 2023 alone, there were 11 interceptions from South Africa and four from Zimbabwe. These interceptions tend to rise towards the end of the South African citrus export season, especially as temperatures increase, leading to increased prevalence of citrus black spot symptoms. The increased interceptions could result in the EU imposing additional measures on South Africa, adding to the cold treatment measures already in place for fruit flies.
