The Greek watermelon season for round varieties started in the first weekend of May, two weeks later than last season due to the low temperature of March and April. Main producing areas of Trifillia and Helia of South Peloponnese are putting the first quantities on the market. This year's most significant stake is the extreme increase of cost production and the transport cost. Producers and packers set the starting price at the level of 1,00€/kg, and buyers resist asking prices of last year's starting point (0,65€/kg) and place an order for a minimum quantity. Exports and demand in West Europe and Turkey's production will determine the rate of price decrease.
