According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), more than 8 lakh MT of potato will go unsold in Bangladesh this year. More than 4.8 lakh hectares of land were brought under potato production this year, citing the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). Although the harvest is likely to exceed 11 million MT, domestic demand for potatoes is only around 7.7 million MT. Only about a fourth of the surplus may be stored for sale. As a result, producers must account for losses resulting from selling surplus output and post-harvest losses. The government has encouraged potato exports to avoid such a significant loss. According to the FAO, farmers recently began potato export during a ceremony in Rangpur's Pairabandh and Mithapukur upazila. The gathering was part of the 'Missing Middle Initiative,' an initiative led by FAO and the Sara Bangla Krishak Society (SBKS), a countrywide network of farmer organizations.
