The fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) is a quarantine pest in several countries. Therefore mango producers in Brazil need to perform hot water treatment (HWT) for markets such as Chile, Argentina, the USA, Japan, and South Korea. Close monitoring is necessary to avoid the fruit fly population in the fields, causing economic losses.
In W47, mango producers in the São Francisco Valley use MAD monitoring, which is a ratio between the number of flies/trap/day, the index needs to be less than 1 to ensure that the population of these flies is under control. The monitoring methodology with the HWT allows large volumes of exports, as we saw in the last season of mangoes sent to the USA, without any phytosanitary problem identified.
