Portuguese sparkling wines are exported to 104 different countries, the United States being its biggest consumer with more than 10 million litters per year. German market is also at the top but with different specifications as its sales are almost entirely done by supermarkets, meaning a lower priced bottle. On the opposite side, there is Japan where the consumption of the higher value wines is increasing by the year. Other markets that have become very interesting, in the last few years, are also Poland and Russia. Poland has grown around 30%, from USD 4.28 million to USD 5.86 million.

What drives big producers and major brands to bet more and more in exporting is price. Vinho Verde is a young and refreshing wine with a competitive price and an excellent quality. When looking further at numbers, from the 16,000 hectares of vine, there are around 15,000 producers and more than 350 different brands. From USD 190 million turnover, more than half is dedicated to export. This wine production is based almost entirely on the Northwest region of Portugal.
