There is a surplus of frozen processed products coming out of Europe, which is largely due to a decrease in demand which is linked to the COVID - 19 pandemic. This surplus is driving prices down and the fear is that EU potato suppliers will dump large amounts of stock in the market at extremely costs, which will have a negative impact on the local potato industry. Subsequently, potato producers in South Africa are lobbying for a temporary ban on frozen potato chips.
