Portuguese cod processors are facing a shortage of Atlantic cod byproducts in the Portuguese and Spanish markets. Seafood manufacturers in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and even in the Scandinavian countries (Denmark or Norway) that used to use only the best parts of the cod for fillets and loins, are now using byproducts to produce value-added cod products, such as breaded nuggets, burger, fish fingers, and others. This, accompanied by the fishing quota decrease for 2023 and the unofficial embargo by some companies of Atlantic cod from Russia, resulted in a shortage and consequently increased demand and price.
