The number of countries in Africa planting biotech crops has doubled in the past years. According to the report by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, the countries planting biotech crops grew from 3 in 2018 to 6 by 2019, these countries including South Africa, Eswatini, and Sudan, most recently joined by Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Malawi. The latest country to join biotech plantation has been Kenya, through approving the cultivation of biotech cotton. There has also been a notable improvement in biotech research, regulation, and acceptance in other Africa regions, such as Mozambique, Niger, Ghana, Rwanda, and Zambia. Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda have already initiated field research on GM Cassava.
