Turkish milk production costs that nearly doubled in 2022, combined with milk prices controlled by the government and the state authorities, brought the producers to the point of bankruptcy. Many dairy farms have closed, and many have gone down in size. Over 1M female animals were slaughtered during this time period because milk prices were insufficient to cover feed costs and Turkey's milk supply dropped off significantly.
The Turkish Statistical Institute reported a decrease in production in its October milk production data. Turkey's milk output dropped from 751,200MT to 725,900MT in October, a 3.4% MoM reduction. The milk production decline is even more pronounced, indicating a 9.6% YoY drop compared to October 2021.
