As wheat prices rose since the start of the war, bread makers and all the industry associated to these type of products are suffering either with prices and low stocks. Despite the buyers are willing to pay for asked price, the stocks are low. It is causing a serious problem for small and medium size companies that exist all over Europe and especially in Portugal.

Milling associations have requested that the Portuguese government supported a large piece of wheat so that there are reserves for human consumption. However, it was no possible to pull through. Even so, associations are trying to get some shipments at a very high expenses, and put an action like tax reduction. Nevertheless, due to the Portuguese financial situation and its obligations towards the EU, the industry doesn’t see it as a possible future solution. It is expected that, if the Russia-Ukraine conflict doesn’t see an end in the near future, one third of these small businesses may collapse.
