In December 2022, the UK saw a nearly 10% decrease in beef imports compared to the previous month, totaling 21,500 tonnes. The annual beef import volume for 2022 was 233,300 tonnes, a 3.6% decrease from 2021, with the majority of the importation being boneless fresh and frozen beef primarily from the EU, especially Ireland. Despite the decrease in overall import volume, the value of these imports increased by 16% to £1.24 billion in 2022.
On the export front, the UK achieved a 20% increase in beef exports for 2022, totaling 123,700 tonnes, with a significant portion being boneless beef sent to the EU. The export value for 2022 was £540.3 million, marking a 48% increase from 2021, despite a slight dip in export volumes in the latter half of the year. The average price of imported and exported beef also rose in 2022, reaching £5,300 and £4,400 per tonne, respectively.
