The small hive beetle (PEC or Aethina Tumida), which has been detected in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, has prompted the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service of Argentina (SENASA) to warn bee producers about the potential risk to their industry. The beetle, which causes significant damage to bee hives by feeding on honey, pollen, brood, and causing hive abandonment, could severely harm Argentina's beekeeping chain, a key industry for honey export to the US and EU. SENASA has called on bee producers to report any signs of the beetle and to implement preventive measures to avoid an outbreak. The agency also emphasized the importance of maintaining Argentina's PEC-free status to meet export health requirements.
