Central Asia, particularly in countries like Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, is facing an unprecedented oversupply of onions due to the 2023 harvest, leading to a significant drop in prices. Farmers and traders, in an attempt to avoid the costs associated with disposing of the surplus, have resorted to giving onions away for free as they begin to sprout and deteriorate. This glut is primarily due to high stocks coupled with low demand, a situation mirrored in neighboring regions. The article suggests that onion prices are expected to remain low until the fall, and the area dedicated to onion cultivation might decrease next season owing to the current low demand for onion seeds. This reduction in cultivation area could, however, lead to a recovery in onion prices.
