Adverse weather conditions have negatively affected walnut production in Hungary this year, impacting fruit size. Despite an increase in the walnut growing area over the past decade, many plantations remain non-irrigated and lack adequate frost protection. Hungary's walnuts, a premium product in the EU, face competition from Chilean imports. Although the country expects a medium to good harvest this year, export prices have decreased due to changes in the international trade situation. Hungary exports 1.5-2.7 thousand tons of dry walnuts in shell worth HUF 1.3-2.5 billion annually, and 1.5-2 thousand tons of walnut kernels worth HUF 2.5-3.5 billion.
