Chinese barley imports from Kazakhstan have surged to 723,000 tonnes due to high demand for feed and competitive pricing. The US Department of Agriculture FAS estimates Kazakh barley production at 3.25 million tons, with exports projected at 1.5 million tonnes for MY 2024/25. Wheat production is expected to improve thanks to better soil moisture, despite some flooding issues. Wheat exports are forecasted at 11.1 million tons, with significant trade agreements with China, although logistical challenges at railway stations and customs persist. Key importers of Kazakh wheat include Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, despite a 20% decrease in overall wheat exports compared to the previous year.
