Kazakhstan's domestic dairy production covers only 81.6% of the country's needs, with the rest being met by imports, according to a government meeting led by Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin. The lack of raw materials, specifically marketable milk, is the main reason for underutilization of the country's dairy processing capacities, which could potentially meet the population's needs. Dairy union head Vladimir Kozhevnikov highlighted the challenge of buying expensive natural milk only to face difficulty in selling the products due to import dominance. Despite subsidies and support for the dairy industry, including breeding and modernization of dairy plants, and plans to build more dairy farms to address the raw material issue, the industry remains underutilized and faces challenges in competition with imports.
