South Korea has made history by exporting its first batch of Halal-certified Hanwoo beef to Malaysia, marking the beginning of international trade for this distinct Korean beef breed. This landmark event, which marks the first instance of Korean beef exports to a country with specific halal certification requirements, was made possible after the Korean slaughterhouse was approved by Malaysia's halal certification body, JAKIM. The three-year contract, signed on the 12th of March in Kuala Lumpur, anticipates a significant increase in exports, with an expected shipment of 1,875 tons, a notable 13 times more than the previous year's exports. This move is seen as a step towards expanding Korean beef exports to other countries with similar halal certification needs, supported by the government's efforts in streamlining the process and ensuring smooth certification in the future. The initiative aims to stabilize the Korean beef market, bolster farm income, and provide assurance to Muslim consumers through the use of QR codes to track the meat's history, highlighting South Korea's commitment to meeting international food safety and certification standards.
