England's female pig breeding herd saw a significant decrease of 20% in 2022, according to Defra census figures, with the total number of pigs also dropping by 9.2%. The decline is attributed to high input costs and a pig backlog, with some businesses leaving the industry and others reducing their numbers. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) predicts a 14% drop in pig production in 2023 due to the 2022 breeding herd decline, and has reported nine quarters of negative margins for producers.
