Researchers in Hungary have identified a new strain of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) that breaks the Sw-5b resistance gene commonly used in tomato breeding. This strain has a unique mutation in the NSm protein, marking the first time this mutation has been linked to the resistance-breaking phenotype. The origin of the strain is unknown, raising concerns about its spread. The findings were published in the European Journal of Plant Pathology and highlight the need to monitor the new strain to develop effective countermeasures.
