As the autumn, winter, and especially Christmas season approaches, more and more customers are looking for cleaned walnuts on the shelves and tables of stores and markets. It is no coincidence that the annual consumption of nuts increases spectacularly during this period, as walnuts are part of the festive menu in addition to many folk customs - wrote Nikoletta Szigethy-Ambrus, analyst of Oeconomus. During the last decade, nut production in Hungary has shown a varied picture: as a result of adverse weather conditions, especially the increasingly frequent hot and dry summers, this sector also faced a significant decrease in yield. Most walnuts in the country are produced in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, where farmers collect almost 50% of the total national quantity. The annual production in Hungary can produce an average of 7,000 tons of walnuts, but in some good years this value can reach 10,000 tons.
