The South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta), a dangerous quarantine organism, has been found in the village of Teofipol, Khmelnytsky region, Ukraine. The pest was initially introduced to the country in 2010 via contaminated tomato shipments from Turkey and Syria and has since spread to over 1190 hectares as of January 1, 2021. The pest can destroy 60% to 100% of nightshade family crops, including tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes, in a short time. Its rapid reproduction and adaptation to new environments have facilitated its spread across Ukraine.
