The article highlights that Jeollanam-do Jindo's abalone has been certified by the Aquaculture Management Council (ASC), a international certification for eco-friendly seafood. This certification is known for its stringent requirements and high cost, involving extensive environmental management and worker rights and safety guarantees. This certification is anticipated to boost the ailing abalone aquaculture industry, which has faced challenges like falling prices and consumption limits, and enhance its export competitiveness in China and Japan. The area's clear sea and cold water flow are credited for the abalone's quality, and the certification is expected to align with the growing consumer preference for eco-friendly seafood post-COVID-19. Jindo-gun plans to extend this certification to seaweed and to use administrative resources to support sustainable fishery and eco-friendly seafood production.
