Researchers at the Technological University of Pereira in Colombia have found that nine species of bamboo can be used as animal feed for ruminants, with three species chosen for their palatability. The study found that the nutritional value of the bamboo forage was similar to that of other woody plants and in some cases superior to commonly used tropical pastures. However, the consumption values were low, and the researchers suggest that factors such as animal feeding patterns, age, and the availability of other forage resources may impact consumption. The rapid growth of bamboo and its adaptability to pastures make it a potential alternative for livestock farming.
