Within the framework of the National Guinea Pig Day, celebrated for 11 years now on the second Friday of October, Huarmey reaffirms its leadership as the epicenter of genetic innovation in the Ancash region. This coastal province has managed to position itself as a benchmark in the technified and sustainable breeding of guinea pigs, a symbol of Peru's identity and food security. Huarmey's commitment to rural development has translated into a strategic alternative to boost the family economy, improve local nutrition, and strengthen the agricultural value chain. On this path, in 2023, the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA) Breeding Producers Center (CPR INIA – Huarmey) was consolidated, implemented in alliance with the Cultural Association for Participatory Integral Development (Acudip) and Antamina, which currently houses 3,000 breeding guinea pigs of improved breeds adapted to the local climate.
