In the first half of 2024, Vietnam spent nearly 400 million USD on importing fruits and vegetables from China, making up 40% of the country's total import turnover for these products. While the majority of Chinese produce is known for being inexpensive, some items are sold at remarkably high prices. An owner of an imported fruit store in Hanoi explained that expensive Chinese peaches are popular among housewives, with some varieties costing as much as European and American products. These high-end Chinese fruits are marketed as 'luxury' items and are often purchased for gift-giving, contributing to the demand despite the higher prices.
