In 2021, the turnover of the dairy sheep and goat breeding in Italy saw a 12% increase, reaching a value of 572 million euros, due to a rise in prices at origin. Despite this, there was a decrease in production by 0.7% for sheep's milk and 1.8% for goat's milk compared to the previous year. Italy remains the third largest producer of sheep's milk in the EU and the leading producer of sheep's milk cheeses. However, farmers are facing challenges such as increasing prices of raw materials and a decrease in sales of pecorino cheeses. The sector is experiencing a positive situation due to a recovery in exports and an increase in prices of representative products, while the farming phase is facing crisis due to drought, fires, and potential effects on exports due to an appreciation of the euro / dollar exchange rate.
