The Ministry of Agriculture of Junta de Andalucía in Spain has reported a 7% increase in the total citrus production for the 2020-2021 campaign, amounting to over 2.3 million tons. This growth is primarily due to higher production of sweet oranges and lemons. Andalusia's orange production alone reached 1.7 million tons, accounting for 73.3% of the region's total citrus fruits. The EU is projected to experience a 10.4% year-on-year increase in citrus production, reaching 11.7 million tonnes, largely due to favorable weather conditions in Spain and Italy. This surge in production could potentially boost EU citrus exports while reducing imports, as the local production is expected to increase due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the hospitality sector's reopening.
