Spaniards reduce their fish consumption at home by 2.7% in one year

Fish product consumption has decreased by 2.7%, while value has experienced an increase of 0.7% in the last moving year (through March 2025), with cod and sea bream being two of the foods that have recorded the greatest decline in purchases during this period. This is one of the main conclusions of the report "Fishing Month by Month," prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food (MAPA) to analyze the behavior of these products in the last moving year (from April 2024 to March 2025). In total, fish purchases by Spanish households have decreased by 4.3%, with a reduction in fresh and frozen fish purchases of 4.5% and 3.3%, respectively. The species that have suffered the greatest decline are cod (21.1%), mackerel (21.0%), and sea bream (23.5%), while an increase has been recorded in the purchase of species such as sardine/anchovy (11.5%), trout (19.4%), salmon (11.0%), or sea bass (18.4%), during this same period of time.
