Italy: The blue crab now becomes a business and is exported to the USA

The blue crab from scourge to resource: not only a new ingredient at the table, but now also a new item of made in Italy agri-food exports. With the first 15-ton container of semi-finished crustaceans having just left for Florida, the marketing of alien crabs caught in Emilia-Romagna has begun in the United States. The specimens were caught by the fishing companies of the Sacca di Goro, in the Comacchio area and in the Po Delta, and will be destined for the tables of American consumers, traditionally great admirers of blue crabs. The idea came to the Rimini-based company Mariscadoras, an all-female start-up, born in 2021: the goal is to promote the food and gastronomic use of invasive marine alien species, starting precisely with the blue crab, among the most harmful currently present in the Mediterranean, due to its voracity and absence of natural predators.
