In 2020, the Netherlands produced 910 million kilos of tomatoes on nearly 1,900 hectares, with 60% carrying the On the way to PlanetProof quality mark and 2% being organic. The country's tomato production primarily consists of vine tomatoes, accounting for 49%. Weather permitting, some tomatoes are also sold directly to consumers. The Netherlands exported 38% of its tomato production to Germany and 15% to the United Kingdom in 2020, while Mexico and the Netherlands were the world's second and third largest exporters of tomatoes, respectively. Per capita, a Dutch person consumes about 5.5 kilos of fresh tomatoes annually, with vine tomatoes being the most popular.
