Hungary's nut yield has seen a significant increase since the mid-1990s, reaching 6.8 thousand tons in 2019. The 2021 nut harvest was rated as medium to good, with a positive foreign trade balance for shelled walnuts but a negative one for walnut kernels. Exports of walnuts, mainly to Germany, increased by 6% in 2021, while imports of walnut kernels, mainly from Ukraine, increased by 11%. Hungary's walnut plantation area has also grown, with optimism despite challenges like unfavorable weather and coronavirus logistic difficulties. Hungarian walnuts are competing with increasing Chilean imports in the European Union.
