In 2020, Ukraine experienced a 97% increase in cheese imports, leading to a trade turnover of $210.4 million, up from $101.6 million the previous year. The import breakdown included other cheeses (56%), fresh cheeses (26%), processed cheeses (13%), blue cheeses (4.5%), and grated or powdered cheeses (0.5%. The most significant increase was in Gouda, with a 3.4-fold rise. The top five cheese suppliers to Ukraine were Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Italy. However, these imported products are undercutting domestic producers in terms of price and quality, prompting local producers to focus on exports to compete. Experts recommend a strategy to bolster animal husbandry, which is currently struggling, as a means to boost domestic cheese production.
