The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that the European Union's protection for Greek feta cheese must also be applied outside of the bloc's borders, settling a dispute between Greece and Denmark. The ruling reinforces that foodstuff produced in the EU, even for export, must adhere to the relevant geographical indications (GIs) protection legislation. This decision aims to preserve the EU's system of intellectual property rights, which includes the protected designation of origin (PDO) status granted to Greek feta in 2002, by providing clear guidelines and maintaining consumer trust. The judgment prevents the misuse of PDO names for products that do not meet the required standards, even in export situations, thereby upholding the integrity of the GI system and its estimated sales value of €75 billion.
