Ukraine is a significant producer of vegetables, ranking 16th globally with an annual output of approximately 10 million tons, and a smaller producer of fruits, placing 53rd with an annual production of about 2.7 million tons. The country's primary crops include tomatoes, cabbage, pumpkins, apples, onions, cucumbers, and carrots. However, Ukraine imports more than 90% of its fresh fruit and a substantial portion of its vegetables due to low domestic production. The majority of these imports are bananas and are sourced from countries like Turkey, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. In contrast, the EU exports around 190,000 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to Ukraine, with Poland, Greece, and the Netherlands being the primary suppliers, and the Netherlands serving as a significant re-export hub. Ukraine's exports of fresh produce are limited, but it significantly exports processed fruits and vegetables, such as dried vegetables, frozen fruit, shelled walnuts, fruit juices, and processed tomatoes, to various countries, including the EU.
